Currently, the legal status of Taiwan continues to be a subject of controversy. Although the island meets the elements of a State required by international law, the truth is that its recognition is more than limited. On one hand, the long-awaited reunification sought by the People’s Republic of China, and on another, the importance of the geostrategic control of Taiwanese microchip companies by the United States, leave the democratic and lawful State of Taiwan trapped in a struggle between the two great hegemonic powers. And while tension in the Strait and in the South China Sea increases, the island remains in its legal limbo.
