Abstract

The ‘turn to history’ in international law has prompted a new wave of research on ‘national’ histories of international law and by extension on the history of international law journals. This article provides a thematic analysis of the study of the history of international law in Revista Española de Derecho Internacional (REDI) since its establishment in 1948. The first part analyses the commemoration of historical international legal events and anniversaries in three thematic sections. The second part reviews the intellectual and professional history of international law in Spain by reference to the intellectual portraits of Spanish authors from the 16th, 17th, 19th and 20th centuries and multiple obituaries published in the journal. The third part provides an overview of historiographical studies and historical reflections while the fourth part and fifth part surveys those related to the relationship between history and territorial disputes and a miscellanea of historical works respectively. The conclusion summarizes the three main stages into which the contributions to the study of the history of international law published in REDI can be divided from 1948 to 2022.
