The death of José Couso Permuy in Iraq (2003) has given rise to various legal proceedings. The relatives of Couso presented a complaint before the Audiencia Nacional in Spain for alleged war crimes. The case raises questions of International Humanitarian Law, International Human Rights Law and International Politics, among others. The study analyzes the main elements of this litigation. We report the facts, judicial procedures and court rulings. The case is an example of courts adapting their role to global events and, at the same time, of law-power relations.
